Spellbound
Saw her on the dance floor and
She was starting to spin
Saw the smile in her eyes
As the lights began to dim
She turned around and around and around
Over and over as I was spellbound
Seemed the song would never end
I was standing near the bar
Waiting for my chance to ask
“Dance with me don’t break my heart”
We’d spin around and around and around
Over and over as I was spellbound
2AM it’s closing time
I was lost there in the crowd
Missed my chance to talk to her
Am I shy or just too proud?
Turning around and around and around
Over and over as I was spellbound
Turning around and around and around
She saw me watching I was still spellbound.
This song was originally more of an acoustic lament, sort of a wistful song about a guy who can’t bring himself to approach a woman to ask her to dance with him in a crowded bar. Fred wanted to change this to more of an upbeat salsa song. I was skeptical in the studio at first, but after a few times through the song with the band I was hooked and loved it. I especially love the bass line. I sometimes call this song my “stalker song” because listened to a certain way the guy is a little creepy. But as the writer of this song I know that the guy in the bar is shy, proud and wistful. He’s not a creeper. I plan to re-record this on the next album and have it be just an acoustic guitar and piano backing the vocals. It was a fine song when initially written. I love the beat of this song and the energy on the version on this album and how diverse the band can play.
