Boat On the Horizon

The world seems to be darker today.
The colors fading, light becomes gray
People are talking, but I can’t hear
On the horizon, the boat disappears.

Chorus:
Lost to my sight, but here in my heart
Promises made, no matter the scar
Frozen in time, a blink of an eye.
Never enough time to say goodbye.

This empty feeling smothers my soul
Numb to the pain, bottom of a hole
Don’t want to wake up, and see my fears
On the horizon, the boat disappears.

Bridge:
I’m alone here in my dreams
And now I’m sinking down
There’s no light that I can see
There’s nothing to be found.

There’s nowhere to hide, these feelings inside.
A sailboat leaving, out with the tide

The progression for this song was written on my Taylor two years ago, but I could never get the melody and lyrics for it. They were just out of reach. Listening to this song you can tell it’s about the loss of someone close to the writer and that there was some darkness that descended afterward. The metaphor of the boat disappearing over the horizon was interesting to me. To reveal this completely, this song was written about our dog, Tuffy. I wrote the lyrics the morning after we had to put him down. Leslie asked about the line, “promises made, no matter the scar,” which was written about the silent promise we make to our pets that we will take care of them no matter how hard it might be for us. Tuffy’s time was up, and we had to give him that kindness, no matter how much of a scar it left on us. Musically, I love the bridge on this song, how it builds up until Jennifer and I come in with the vocals. I play the electric rhythm guitar and the acoustic guitar on this song. The acoustic is only played on the intro and then after the bridge to bring back the verse. Originally that acoustic guitar riff was played throughout the song, but we changed that in the studio.
