(When) Evening Has Come
Out of luck, out of time
Watching chances fade
Slipping thru these hands of mine.
Once again
I know things always change in the end.
Giving grace, giving time
Make a gift of things that can save your soul so I’m
Going to try
I’ll choose truth over living a lie.
Chorus:
Sometimes when the evening has come
Look back on the things we have done
Hoping that our time not in vain
Oh, I wonder, when we leave here, what will remain.
In the sky, on the wind
All these wonderful things called life begin
In our hearts
Time together or when we’re apart.
Bridge:
We’ve stumbled these dark roads
And made some mistakes
Asking the question, “What will it take?”
Searching for answers
That bring us together
Finding our way there
I’ll love you forever……
We will live, we will die
We will laugh at life while we’re trying not to cry
In the end
Gratitude is the key, once again.
I didn’t know this was a rock song when I wrote it, but Fred and Scott thought it would sound better as a rocker. The lyrics for this have an interesting start. I began one set of lyrics for this and let them sit for a week. Then I came back and wrote some alternate verses and deleted the originals. I played it for Leslie and she asked to see the lyric sheet, which had both sets on it. She liked both sets and asked why they couldn’t be combined, so that’s what I did. I thought they were very different but it turns out they aren’t. The lyrics are a bit direct and possibly dark, but the older I get the clearer it is that things end and thoughts about what we leave behind are more important. The song ends with the line, “gratitude is the key once again,” which is one of the main themes in several of my songs and in my life.
