Come Back to Colorado

Intro:
Verse:
We first moved her in twenty ten
We were just out of school our lives set to begin
We had no idea, how hard it’d be
But we both made a promise that
We tried to keep.

Chorus:
I never thought she’d come back to Colorado
Leave her new home and everything behind
Never thought she’d fall back in love
With our simple mountain life
Cause she packed her bags and walked out the door
With a teardrop in her eyes

Verse 2:
He worked two jobs and I worked three
There just wasn’t enough time for him and me
She got frustrated and I got mad
And my words hurt the best friend that I ever had.

Chorus:
I never thought you’d come back to Colorado
Leave your new home and everything behind
Never thought you’d fall back in love
With our simple mountain life
Cause you’d packed your bags and walked out the door
With a teardrop in your eyes

Verse 3
Conversations we made new plans
There are changes to make, the future’s in our hands
We’ll do things differently, we’ll start again
And we’ll try so much harder than we did back then.

Repeat Chorus and Tag

This song was mainly written by Rob, with some help from Leslie on lyrics. Kate wrote a third verse when I got “stuck” but I ended up writing a different one. The inspiration for this song comes from the younger people that Leslie and I have met here around Durango, Colorado. We seldom meet anyone here who doesn’t have at least 2 jobs and some have more. It’s hard to get by on low wages in a very expensive town, and this is a story of two people who tried, broke up due to the pressure, and then get back together. I love what Fred did with his lead electric guitar, his riffs are really sweet. When we originally recorded this Kate and I sang the third verse in unison. Fred told me he never liked unison singing and the more I listened to it the more I thought it needed a harmony. Kate and I worked on it with Jeff Jones in his studio with Kate trying to do a harmony. She ended up not being able to because it was out of her range. Since we already had the unison vocals tracked, we removed mine and then I gave the harmony a shot, essentially using what she had heard but couldn’t sing. Once that was done I decided it was too jarring to go from the chorus into the third harmony verse, it just seemed to be too abrupt. I asked Jeff if he could create a 4 beat instrumental measure to ease our way into that verse, and he came up with a really nice one. You can’t really tell that it wasn’t recorded originally this way. My favorite couplet in the song is when I sing, “She got frustrated and I got mad/ and my words hurt the best friend that I ever had”. This rings very true to me.
