Favorite Shade of Blue
Favorite Shade of Blue
Intro:
Comfy, faded worn out jeans
Sunday best with tailored seams
Calm as feathers soaring on the wind
Angry as the raging sea.
Clearest sky, I could cry
Stings the corners of my eyes
When it hurts to be with you
You’re my favorite shade of blue
Careless words, slamming doors
Holding hands, wanting more
Complicated lives, but always friends
And we have weathered every storm
Heart so true, I dream of you
Stings the corners of my eyes
When it hurts to be with you
You’re still my favorite shade of blue
Bridge and Out:
Sinking to the ocean floor
I can’t see sunlight anymore
And when my world goes black
I trust you’ll bring me back.
I can trust you’ll bring me higher
Back to the rarest color
Can I trust you? Will you bring me back to you?
Oh back to blue.
Will you bring me back to you?
Oh back to blue?
This is another song that I came up with the progression and texted it to Kate. She worked on it at her home and brought it back to Leslie and me to work on. She had the first verse complete as well as the first chorus. Leslie and I did most of the second verse. I remember all of us working on it, looking at each other thinking “ok, somebody come up with something”. We started kicking around ideas and Leslie thought the verse should be sort of a conflict and mentioned slamming doors. I came up with “holding hands and wanting more” as well as “complicated lives but always friends” and Leslie had already come up with “and we have weathered every storm”. I had to get the rhyme to storm, which is where I came up with “holding hands and wanting more”. I also came up with “heart so true, I dream of you” for the second chorus while Kate already had “stings the corners of my eyes”. The bridge of this song didn’t come until months later. We all thought the songs needed one but it really wasn’t finalized until the morning that we went into the studio to record it. I had come up with the progression for the bridge, while Kate had the lyrics for it, but I didn’t like the way it came back into the verse and choruses. In the studio that morning I spoke with Kate about putting the bridge at the very end of the song and we worked on how to get back to the blue color. Fred helped with suggestions and very quickly we had the song finished and ready to record. In the nick of time! And I do love the ending of this song. There was no panic, we were just all working to make this the best song it could be – but the pressure of the studio sometimes helps the process.
